VESSEL is an independent literature, art and culture publication. We publish work that inspires, pushes and breaks boundaries, engages imagination and redefines, well, everything. Give us your thought provoking, your heart breaking, your weird and luscious, your fierce and joyous creations. We accept submissions of original literature, visual and fine arts, and opinion-editorial (op-ed) on a rolling basis.

We believe art elevates humanity. We believe every person is inherently a unique vessel for creation. We want to see what you’ve made and share it. Show us the world through new lenses. Give us your best.

//

Please allow up to 1-2 months for a reply. We do our best to review submissions in a timely manner and with the attention they deserve. We will be in touch as soon as we can. If your submitted work was accepted elsewhere (congrats!) please notify us to pull the submission by emailing us here.

All submission fees are non-refundable.

ARTS

VESSEL publishes visual and fine arts of all kinds- paintings, mixed media, photography, sculpture, assemblage, illustrations, collage etc. What we are really interested in is work that is fresh and thought provoking. Please submit a portfolio of 6-12 images of your work and 2 pages of copy- a one page statement on the work and a brief artist bio on the second page (please include a link to your website).

You should note we like to give artists the stage to discuss their work, so your statement is the place to do this. If you’d like to know more of what this looks like, be sure to check out the work we’ve featured already in ARTS

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS:

● The submission should have a cover page with a brief artist statement and bio followed by a sheet indicating the dimensions and materials of each work.

● Each image submitted should be labeled with a title (ex: Jane-Doe-Photo Title.jpeg). All images must not exceed 5mb in size. .Jpeg and .png images only.

● *Please Note: Simultaneous submissions are ok (we know it’s a hustle) but we ask that you keep us updated should your work be accepted elsewhere.

● Original, previously unpublished work only- for fine artists this does not include current or upcoming shows, but please notify us if there are any.

OP-ED

What is going on in the world that we need to know about? What do you want to talk about? Tell us about something relevant (or maybe weird and unknown but important). Be provocative and outspoken and smart. Share some relevant research and experience. Tell it like it is. And tell us in a voice we haven’t heard yet. You’ve got 3,000-4,000 words. Go.

We leave this relatively open because we want to make space for a variety of work. If you have questions, you’re welcome to contact us here. We will do our best to get back to you in a timely manner. Please be sure to include ‘Op-Ed Submission Question/Pitch’ in the subject line.

SPECIFICATIONS:

● For already completed works, please attach a cover page with a brief synopsis of the article, the title and a brief bio of the author (including a website).

● For a pitch or question, email us with a brief synopsis of the proposed article, why it is an important issue and what you plan to address. Please note, we do prefer already completed pieces.

● Submit Word documents only.

● *Please Note: Simultaneous submissions are ok (we know it’s a hustle) but we ask that you keep us updated should your work be accepted elsewhere.

● Original, previously unpublished work only.

MOVERS//SHAKERS

VESSEL publishes the MOVERS//SHAKERS section, to profile people, organizations and movements that are happening and changing the world for the better. Politics, life, news headlines can all be a lot to process these days. So think of this as your monthly dose of ‘Good News’- a place to learn about folks in the world doing good on large and small scales. We want to support them by giving them exposure.

Nominating a MOVER//SHAKER is free of course! Just be sure to tell us how we can get in touch with you and the person/people and organization you are nominating.

SPECIFICATIONS: We need to know who, what, where, when, why and how. Please include (at least) one individual and their organization or work, their website and contact information and why you believe their work is critical and making a difference. Word documents only.

If you need a good example of the types of organizations/people that would be a good fit, be sure to check out the MOVERS//SHAKERS we’ve featured on VESSEL.

EDITING

*EDITING Services will resume January 2021*

At VESSEL we know what a hustle it can be as an artist, entrepreneur and all-around creative, submitting and trying to get your work out there. We also know how beneficial it would be if often there was a chance to ask Why didn’t you take my piece? or What did you think of the form/ syntax/ effectiveness of…? Or Do you have any feedback on the submission?; or maybe you’re closing in on a final draft of a manuscript and just want one more set of eyes on a slice of it… Feedback helps when there are so many venues for publication out there.

So we decided to offer editing services for those seeking expert insight.

WHAT YOU GET

Our editing team is made up of writers, scholars and professionals with expert experience reading, critiquing and editing work. When you submit a piece for editing you’ll receive:

· A chance to ask for feedback on a specific element of your work

· An annotated copy of your work with edits, suggestions + constructive criticism

· A half page to one page review on the work(s) submitted with feedback offering perspective and insight, including a thoughtful review of strengths and weaknesses

· And possibly, if an editor feels it’s relevant, they may also offer recommended reading for study or contextualization

WHAT WE EDIT

We offer editing on much of the same work we publish: creative writing [literature], op-ed pieces and if desired, help on author and artist biography’s and artists statements.

You can submit up to 15-20 pages in any genre.

We Do Not offer editing for academic or scholarly papers (so please don’t send your art history term paper), these will be returned.

All work will be returned within 7-30 business days with edits. If you need it sooner we can try to accommodate you, but cannot guarantee the turn-around, pending our current workload. We try to work quickly, but sometimes it takes longer than we like. Feel free to email us if you have questions.

**Please be aware your submission and the processing of payment is also a confirmation that you understand and agree to these terms listed above and that you acknowledge and accept all editing fees are nonrefundable.**
